Education in Indian Languages: A Step Toward Unity
The Indian education landscape is shifting, with a growing emphasis on teaching in local languages. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently highlighted the importance of this approach. He believes that from pre-school to advanced studies, education should be delivered in Indian languages. This change, according to him, aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to strengthen learning outcomes.
During a recent event, Pradhan launched 55 books in classical languages, including Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. These works were developed by experts under the Centers of Excellence for Classical Languages. Notably, one project focused on the acclaimed Tamil text, Tirukkural, showcasing the rich heritage of Indian literature.
Pradhan emphasized the government’s commitment to promote classical languages. Last year, five more languages—Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali—were officially recognized as Indian classical languages. This effort reflects an understanding that India’s linguistic diversity is a vital part of its cultural identity.
Languages in India connect communities and foster a sense of belonging. According to recent data from linguistic surveys, India is home to over 19,500 languages and dialects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has noted that every Indian language holds importance, viewing them all as national languages.
