The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) held an engaging webinar on January 7, 2026, focusing on how Indian innovators can play a key role in global telecom standards. This event aimed at educating startups and academic institutions about both national and international standardization processes.
Over 150 participants, including industry leaders and researchers, joined the webinar, reflecting a growing interest in shaping the future of telecom networks. Hosted by the Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCoE) India, in partnership with the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI), and the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), this event highlighted the importance of active participation in standardization.
Industry experts, including Shri Ashok Kumar from the DoT and Dr. Rajesh Sharma from TCoE, emphasized that telecom standards are crucial for driving innovation and gaining access to global markets. They pointed out that involvement in standard-setting allows Indian startups to protect their ideas and attain visibility on an international level—key as India moves towards its Bharat 6G Mission.
A technical session led by TSDSI experts, Mr. P. K. Jaswal and Mr. Dhivagar Baskaran, simplified complex frameworks such as 3GPP and oneM2M. They explained how these organizations work and provided pathways for startups to contribute technically, making it easier for them to participate in global discussions.
Shri Vineet Malik from TEC further elaborated on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) frameworks that govern global standards. He pointed out that these frameworks are essential for managing spectrum and harmonizing regulations worldwide, showcasing how Indian innovators can engage in these platforms.
In a notable speaker segment, Dr. Sreenath Ramanath, founder of Lekha Wireless Solutions, shared his experiences with international standards organizations. He discussed the challenges he faced and the support from the ecosystem that helped him achieve business gains through his contributions.
Accepted technical contributions often transform into official global standards, influencing regulations and procurement choices. For Indian innovators, this not only enhances credibility but also helps in faster adoption of their technologies.
The session wrapped up with a Q&A, encouraging participants to involve themselves in standardization. The DoT emphasized its support for startups and academic institutions, particularly in emerging technology areas like 6G, IoT, and AI.
