Empowering Kids: How School Rewards Shine Through Inspiring Ironman Athletes

Students at Taupō Primary School recently made a big impact by writing over 1,500 motivational letters for the athletes participating in the ANZCO Foods Ironman New Zealand. In appreciation, ANZCO Foods gave each participating school—a total of three—a new barbecue.

This heartwarming tradition has local students penning personal notes for athletes, making it a unique part of the race experience. With a record turnout expected at the 2026 event, this year’s effort was monumental.

The Ironman event draws thousands to Taupō each year, significantly benefiting local businesses and tourism. Rick Walker, the general manager of sales and marketing at ANZCO Foods, highlighted how these letters create a special connection. “For many competitors, opening their race pack and reading a note from a local child gives them a real boost before race day,” he said.

This year, 34 ANZCO employees and farmers also competed, adding to the local excitement. Marotiri Primary students were especially thrilled when their barbecue was delivered by 12-time Ironman champion Cam Brown. Located about 30 minutes from Taupō, Marotiri Primary is a small school with around 150 students.

Brown emphasized the emotional significance of the letters, saying, “Athletes travel from all over, and a message from a local child makes the event special.” Principal Rose Symes shared that the school plans to use their barbecue for an upcoming fundraiser, featuring donated Angel Bay burger patties.

“Our students loved writing letters and encouraging athletes,” she noted. Many of them had family participating in the race. Meeting Cam Brown and showing him their Ironkidz medals was a cherished moment.

As community engagement continues to grow, initiatives like this not only boost morale but also foster local pride. Events such as Ironman New Zealand demonstrate the power of a united community and the joy of small gestures. According to recent surveys, local involvement in sports events increases community spirit and participation, reinforcing the importance of such heartfelt initiatives.
