Exciting news for the Morecambe Bay community! A generous £1.5 million grant from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund will support initiatives aimed at boosting green skills and environmental awareness.
This funding backs the Our Bay Our Future program, a collaborative effort led by Lancaster University. They are working alongside Lancaster and Morecambe College, the University of Cumbria, and the Morecambe Bay Partnership.
Carys Nelkon, the partnership manager for the Morecambe Bay Curriculum, expressed enthusiasm over the funding: “We’re thrilled! This grant allows us to take our community-based education efforts to the next level. It empowers young people to embrace sustainability and take meaningful action.”
The program will officially launch in late 2026 or early 2027. It aims to promote environmental skills through nine distinct schemes, utilizing a “head, heart, and hands” educational approach. This framework will help participants build knowledge, skills, and values critical for driving climate action.
Professor Steve Decent, vice-chancellor at Lancaster University, highlighted the importance of this initiative. “This project is crucial for our economic future,” he said. “It aligns with the goals of Inclusive Growth and Net Zero. A full project launch is anticipated later this year, with activities planned to extend until 2029. With growing awareness around climate issues, such community-focused programs are essential.
