Singh highlighted that support systems for migrants are crucial. Initiatives like the Indian Community Welfare Fund and the MADAD portal help those in vulnerable situations. Additionally, India’s consular services offer timely assistance, legal advice, and financial help to citizens abroad.
Singh is leading India’s delegation at the Second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) in New York, which runs from May 4-8. During his speech at the UN, he emphasized how technology plays a vital role in enhancing the safety and efficiency of migration. Tools like the eMigrate system and the National Career Service portal aim to protect workers from exploitation.
He noted that these technological platforms also help prepare migrants for work abroad, ensuring they are well-informed. Moreover, India has signed 27 migration agreements with 23 countries, fostering structured mobility while protecting workers’ rights.
Singh pointed out a key belief: migration should be a choice, not a necessity. To fulfill this, India invests in opportunities for financial inclusion and growth. The focus is on making pathways for migration ethical and transparent.
Recent reports indicate that over 17 million Indian workers live outside the country, contributing significantly to the Indian economy through remittances, which have reached about $87 billion in 2021.
However, challenges still exist. Singh acknowledged issues surrounding social protection and data systems that need improvement. He stressed the importance of global cooperation to ensure migration is beneficial for all involved.
As migration becomes a more central feature of the world economy, India’s people-centric strategy could offer insights for other nations. Countries can learn from India’s emphasis on dignity, inclusion, and respect for rights in migration governance.
