Insights into Tibet’s Situation Shared with University Students
On December 25, 2025, Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering Teykhang met with a group of students from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in Dharamshala. This visit, organized in collaboration with the College for Higher Tibetan Studies, aimed to educate students about the ongoing situation in Tibet and the efforts of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile.
This delegation included 64 students and faculty members from the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies. Prof. Mahesh Deokar led the group, expressing gratitude to their hosts for coordinating the visit.
During her address, Teykhang highlighted Tibet’s rich history, which spans over 2,000 years. She emphasized the deep cultural ties between Tibet and India. She tackled the sensitive topic of China’s claim that Tibet has always been part of its territory, presenting evidence and context to challenge that narrative.

She brought attention to the current repression in Tibet under Chinese policies, which aim to erase Tibetan identity. The geostrategic importance of the Tibetan Plateau was also discussed, as it is the source of major rivers vital to several countries in South Asia.
In her closing remarks, Teykhang encouraged students to advocate for Tibetan rights. She urged them to raise awareness about the oppression faced by Tibetans, especially under the Chinese Communist Party.
