NASHVILLE, Tenn. — At McGavock High School, students are diving into the world of culinary arts and business through a program called Raider Bites. This food truck initiative not only teaches cooking skills but also covers business management essentials.
Matthew Long, who works as the sous chef, shared how this experience has shaped his future. “I’m not lost going into college,” he explained. “I’ve been doing this for three years. I know what I want to do.”
The food truck operates thanks to a collaboration with Intuit, the firm behind popular tools like TurboTax and QuickBooks. They provide the necessary support for this hands-on learning experience.
Students learn to run the food truck by planning menus, preparing meals, and managing finances. Typically, a team of five to eight students works together, each with a unique role. “They’re learning communication, teamwork, and financial management,” said Liliana Pichardo, a senior program manager with Intuit. These skills are vital for success in the food service industry.
The students have taken the truck to Deloitte’s Nashville office for lunch service and have also contributed meals to those in need during Thanksgiving. They focus on speed and efficiency, crucial for keeping customers satisfied. “You have to work fast because if people are waiting, they might get upset,” said senior Nathaniel Truitt.
Such programs are increasingly valued as they prepare students for real-world challenges. According to a 2022 survey by the National Restaurant Association, 60% of restaurant operators say they struggle to find qualified workers. Training programs like Raider Bites can help bridge that gap, giving students the skills they need to succeed.
Overall, Raider Bites not only equips students for future careers but also fosters a sense of community through service. With hands-on experience, these students are ready to take on the world.
