Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Pakistan recently and emphasized the need for dialogue between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue. During his two-day trip, he spoke with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended a signing ceremony for 24 agreements aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.
Erdogan highlighted the importance of addressing Kashmir according to UN resolutions while considering the wishes of the Kashmiri people. He reaffirmed Turkey’s support for the Kashmiris, expressing solidarity with them.
The relationship between India and Pakistan has soured since August 5, 2019, when India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Despite this, Erdogan noted Turkey’s commitment to fostering a strong partnership with Pakistan.
During the seventh session of their High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, Erdogan and Sharif set a goal of increasing their trade volume to $5 billion. They signed a joint declaration aimed at deepening their strategic partnership across various sectors including agriculture, energy, and health.
Sharif welcomed Erdogan back to Pakistan, emphasizing the significance of their friendship. He expressed gratitude for Turkey’s support during natural disasters in Pakistan and praised Erdogan’s leadership within the Islamic world, highlighting his advocacy for oppressed people.
Erdogan’s visit was marked by a formal welcome ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House, where he was honored with a guard of honor and a fly-past by fighter jets. He also planted a sapling with Shehbaz Sharif to symbolize their growing relationship.
