Empowering Rivers School Students to Tackle Climate Change: A Transformative Workshop

Hope for Tomorrow Initiative (HOFTI Centre) is making waves in Rivers State, Nigeria. They’re focused on teaching young people about environmental issues.

Recently, HOFTI conducted an event at Government Comprehensive Secondary School Obite. They aimed to enlighten students on climate change and environmental degradation. With support from the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF), the goal was to empower students as future environmental leaders.

Dr. Prince Eze, the coordinator of HOFTI, highlighted the urgency of this education. He expressed concern for young people, noting, “If things are not addressed, they won’t have an environment to call their own.”

The program included discussions on ways to combat climate change, keep the environment clean, and the crucial role of community involvement. Students were encouraged to take action and be change-makers in their surroundings.

Dr. Ogechi Cookey, an environmental justice advocate, shared insights on how the oil and gas industry is linked to climate issues in the Niger Delta. She pointed out that activities like gas flaring have harmful effects on health. “These emissions are causing climate change and affecting our people’s health,” she said.

Alarmingly, Dr. Cookey noted that the average life expectancy in the Niger Delta is between 40 and 45 years, much lower than the national average. This statistic underscores the serious impact of environmental neglect.

Comrade Felix Dinkpa from the school praised HOFTI’s initiative. “The education provided is vital. If every school adopted this, our environment would improve significantly,” he said.

Students also expressed gratitude for the knowledge gained. Promise Precious, a senior student, shared, “I learned that the environment is where we live. Understanding climate change and its causes is crucial.”

The event concluded with the formation of an environmental club at the school. This club will empower students to engage in eco-friendly activities and promote sustainability in their community.

With climate change being a pressing global issue, the efforts by HOFTI Centre are vital. As youth become informed and active, they can champion the cause for a healthier planet, not just in Nigeria but beyond.
