Empowering Rural Communities: Discover How South Plains Food Bank is Making a Difference

LUBBOCK, Texas—The South Plains Food Bank is truly dedicated to the Lubbock community and beyond. Travis Johnson, the food bank’s Chief Operations Officer, emphasizes the importance of reaching out to nearby towns as well.

“We’re on a mission to serve rural areas where assistance is often lacking,” Johnson explains. Their team travels to 35 different cities, delivering trucks filled with food. Each month, they reach places like Hale Center with essential items—food that brings comfort and joy.

“We build relationships in these communities,” Johnson adds. “These people are vital to the South Plains. Many are involved in agriculture, so we understand their needs.”

When the food bank goes beyond Lubbock, volunteers witness the impact firsthand. “We don’t just bring food; we bring hope,” Johnson says. He believes that feeling cared for can spark a sense of optimism, transforming lives.

The food bank covers a massive area of 33,000 square miles, which requires around $60,000 annually just for fuel. This shows how important community support is for their mission.

Recent statistics highlight the growing need for food assistance. According to Feeding America, food insecurity affects one in eight people in the U.S. This underscores the vital role food banks play, not just in providing meals but also in fostering hope and connection.

As the season of giving approaches, Johnson encourages everyone to think about how they can help. Simple acts—like donating or volunteering—can make a world of difference in someone’s life.
