MARTIN, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee at Martin is taking an important step to improve healthcare in nearby rural areas. With a grant from the University of Tennessee Grand Challenge, the university, along with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the University of Tennessee Southern, will launch a mobile health unit to reach communities in need.
Tennessee faces significant healthcare challenges, ranking 44th in the nation, according to the Tennessee Department of Health. Rural residents often bear the brunt of this issue. Dr. Mary Radford, chair of the nursing department at UT Martin, is leading the effort to address these needs, focusing on the most vulnerable populations.
“We analyzed CDC data to find the counties with the greatest healthcare challenges,” Radford said. “Lake County and Carroll County have the most pressing needs.”
Over the past nine months, UT Martin’s nursing department has collaborated with local health officials to assess community priorities. They found that mental health, substance use, and weight management are significant issues in these areas.
“Our goal is to provide education, screenings, and resources to help people lead healthier lives,” Radford explained. The mobile health unit will bring care directly to residents, making healthcare more accessible.
This unit will also serve as an educational tool for nursing students. “Students will gain valuable experience interacting with the community, practicing their skills, and seeing firsthand the importance of healthcare in rural settings,” Radford noted.
The aim of this initiative is to enhance cooperation among UT System universities to deliver better support to underserved communities.
In recent years, similar initiatives have shown promise in rural healthcare. A report from the Rural Health Research Center found that mobile health units can dramatically increase access to essential services, especially in hard-hit areas. Social media reactions indicate strong community support for such initiatives, with many local residents expressing gratitude for the attention to their healthcare needs.
