Rowan Humanists Support Local Science Teachers
On February 11, 2025, the Rowan County Humanists showed their commitment to education by donating $200 each to two local science teachers, Kiristen Clement from Southeast Middle School and Rena Taylor from Carson High School. The funds are intended to help them purchase essential science supplies and equipment.
During a meeting at Pancho Villa Mexican Restaurant attended by more than 20 members, Humanist president Mike Baranski and secretary Pete Prunkl presented the teachers with the donations. Their previous visit to the group in April 2024 led to a conversation about the challenges of obtaining adequate supplies for science education. Instead of a philosophical discussion, Clement and Taylor focused on the practical difficulties they face in providing hands-on experiences for their students.
Both teachers emphasized that engaging students in science requires real materials. Unfortunately, costs can be high, often forcing them to pay out of pocket for supplies. Taylor mentioned that the money received from the Humanists would significantly aid a vital eco-column project she plans for her 60 AP Environmental Science students.
“It is wonderful to receive support from a local organization that cares deeply about science education,” she said. “I am thrilled.”
This effort is part of a larger mission by the Rowan Humanists, who have been active since 2015. They have donated thousands to various local charities, including Communities in Schools and the Family Crisis Center. These contributions reflect their dedication to fostering a collaborative and ethical community.
