BOMDILA, 27 Nov: An engaging workshop focused on biodiversity, climate change, and scientific enquiry took place recently, hosted by Metamorphosis Film Junction (MFJ) along with Garung Thuk and the West Kameng Photography Club (WKPC). This event aimed to raise awareness among students about their role in protecting the environment.
Sange Norbu Thungon, the WKPC secretary, emphasized that students are the future guardians of nature. He noted, “They must understand their responsibilities toward our fragile environment.” He encouraged them to share this knowledge with their families and communities.
MFJ, established in 2003 in New Delhi, specializes in storytelling and photography, focusing on underrepresented areas in South Asia. They have a rich history of working across all Indian states, particularly in Northeast India.
A highlight of the workshop was the screening of “Nocturnes,” a documentary that celebrates India’s natural beauty and the hard work of scientific research. Set in the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, this film showcases the Eastern Himalayas’ biodiversity and encourages children to connect with nature.
Director Anirban Dutta shared that the goal of the film is to spark curiosity and appreciation for the environment among young people. “We want children to engage with nature actively,” he explained.
“Nocturnes” has gained international recognition, participating in over 50 film festivals and receiving prestigious awards. It even won the Special Jury Award for Craft at Sundance 2024 and further acclaim at many other festivals. This showcases a growing global interest in environmental issues.
Filmmaker Abhijeet Phartiyal and associate producer Ruchika Gupta led interactive activities during the workshop, including skits about nature. Such hands-on experiences can be crucial for effective learning. According to a study by the National Science Teachers Association, interactive and experiential learning can significantly enhance student engagement and retention of knowledge.
Overall, this workshop reflects a positive trend in education, where awareness about climate issues is being integrated into learning, preparing today’s youth to be proactive stewards of the environment.
