Teenagers are leading a social movement in Devon to tackle climate anxiety with action.
In 2024, students from Churston Ferrers Grammar School in Brixham started Roots Media. Their goal is to inspire and empower young people to take charge of environmental issues. Co-founders Lucas Brendon, Matt McEwen, and Fyn Nadin wanted to address the rising concerns about climate change that affect their generation.
What started as a classroom project has transformed into a vibrant platform that combines media, fashion, and activism. Their clothing brand donates all its profits—over £3,000 so far—to local environmental projects in Devon, focusing on sustainability and conservation.
Lucas, now Director and Head of Media, noted, “We noticed a lot of young people feeling anxious about climate change but found few ways to act. Roots gives them that platform to make a difference now.”
Roots Media also creates engaging content, including a podcast called Turning the Tide. This show features guests like Riverford founder Guy Watson and marine biologist Dr. Imogen Napper, highlighting voices that are making a difference in the community.
In addition, Lucas represents youth perspectives on key issues. He recently appeared on Radio Exe, discussing environmental crime with criminal psychologist Julia Shaw. His involvement shows the importance of youth voices in shaping discussions around climate change and social enterprise.
As Roots Media grows, its founders hope to reach and inspire even more young people across Devon. Research shows that youth-driven initiatives can significantly influence environmental awareness. According to a 2022 survey by the Global Youth Climate Network, 70% of young people feel that their efforts can lead to positive change. Roots Media aims to harness this energy and foster a stronger network dedicated to protecting the planet.
By amplifying youth voices and promoting sustainable leadership, Roots Media is paving the way for a brighter, greener future. Their work demonstrates that when young people come together, they can turn anxiety into action.
