“Empowering the Future: GreenHubAfrica Launches Innovative Youth Network for Climate Action” – Voice of Nigeria Broadcasting Service

The GreenHubAfrica Foundation has kicked off an exciting initiative called the Climate Action SuperHeroes (CASH) Youth Network. This digital platform aims to empower 50,000 young people to innovate in climate-smart solutions and circular economy practices.

Launched in Abuja during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration, also known as WEDex, this effort marks a significant moment in environmental advocacy. Mr. Henry Bassey, CEO of GreenHubAfrica, shared the foundation’s vision: to create a greener, more sustainable continent.

Bassey highlighted the employment opportunities within waste management, emphasizing how engaging youth in this sector can boost the economy. The foundation’s 2024 CASH outreach program has shown impressive results, with many participants actively showcasing their acquired skills.

Originally a virtual event started during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, WEDex has evolved into a vibrant movement. This year is particularly meaningful as it symbolizes recovery and progress in addressing environmental challenges.

Reflecting on the evolution of WEDex, Bassey noted, “What began as a simple webinar series has blossomed into a significant event focused on actionable solutions.” The gathering not only promotes dialogue but also accountability and real-life changes in environmental practices.

Dr. Efegbidiki Okobia, President of the Nigerian Environmental Society, pointed out that plastic pollution poses a severe challenge in waste management in Nigeria. He stressed the need for all sectors—government, private industry, and civil society—to collaborate in tackling this issue.

“To combat plastic pollution effectively, we need to address existing gaps in our waste management systems,” Okobia said. He suggested that proper waste sorting and effective evacuation to recycling facilities are crucial steps that must be taken.

World Environment Day, celebrated every June 5, focuses on raising awareness and mobilizing action for environmental protection. The theme for 2025 is **“Beat Plastic Pollution.”** With youth and community engagement at the forefront, the hope is to foster a generation committed to sustainable living.

Looking back at history, the United Nations declared June 5 as World Environment Day in 1972. It was a response to growing environmental concerns and has since become a powerful platform for global advocacy. Today, this annual event inspires countries and individuals worldwide to take concrete steps towards environmental conservation.
