Empowering the Navajo Nation: How Technology is Transforming Lives and Communities

For the past 20 years, the Navajo Nation’s Diné Development Corporation (DDC) has been busy building companies that offer services like information technology, engineering, and environmental solutions. The money earned helps fund social programs for the Navajo people, who live across Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, the DDC operates ten companies that serve federal, state, and tribal governments.

This approach helps generate income outside the reservation, which is then reinvested back into the Navajo economy. This creates a cycle of growth and development for the Native American community, says Vikkilynn Watchman, a spokesperson for the tribe.

“Founded in 2004, the Diné Development Corporation shows the strength and vision of the Navajo people,” Watchman explains. “By diversifying the economy and competing on a global scale, DDC not only drives economic growth but also offers hope, empowering the Navajo community to seize opportunities while staying true to their roots.”

As of 2024, the DDC contributed $4.8 million to the Navajo Nation’s general fund, helping to support long-term economic growth. Watchman highlights that these dividends are essential for the tribe’s financial health.

Additionally, the DDC has invested $15.5 million (as of the third quarter of 2024) to support Navajo small businesses, sponsorships, and events that benefit U.S. military veterans and the wider community. Tribal leaders ensure these funds are used to tackle community needs while encouraging growth.

To provide effective solutions, the DDC focuses on innovation. Harold Brown, the company’s business development director and a former U.S. Air Force pilot, emphasizes this during a recent interview at their new San Antonio office.
