Empowering the Next Generation: Adviser Rizwana Urges Youth to Create a Sustainable Future for Bangladesh

Youth and Environmental Leadership: A Call to Action

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, recently emphasized the vital role of youth in building a sustainable future. Speaking at the Green Energy Olympiad 2025 in Dhaka, she reminded young people of their responsibility to tackle environmental challenges and innovate for a greener world.

"You must lead in addressing the problems we are leaving behind," Hasan said. She highlighted the need for strong policies and actions to ensure a sustainable future. Drawing inspiration from Singapore’s environmental efforts, she urged the youth to be proactive and responsible in their approach to climate issues.

Recent trends show that youth are increasingly engaged in environmental activism. According to a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center, 70% of young people globally believe that climate change is a major threat. This willingness to act can drive significant change if harnessed effectively.

Hasan pointed out that, unlike fossil fuel users who often neglect pollution, the youth can take a stand. "Innovative thinking from you is crucial," she stressed. She encouraged them to adopt different lifestyles and philosophies that promote sustainability.

At the Green Energy Olympiad, participants will compete not just for prizes but for the opportunity to champion climate actions in the future. Hasan’s message resonated with many present, including notable figures like Monower Mostafa, who leads environmental initiatives in the region.

Social media has also played a role in mobilizing youth around environmental issues. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram are buzzing with discussions about sustainability, with hashtags like #YouthForClimate gaining traction. Young activists have been using these spaces to share ideas and strategies to combat climate change, illustrating their passion and commitment.

As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, the call for youth leadership in sustainability has never been more critical. By embracing their role in shaping a better future, young people can pave the way for a greener Bangladesh and beyond.
