Only about 35% of workers in science are women. To encourage more girls to explore science careers, the Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal held a special event for International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Local organizations and women in various scientific fields filled the museum with interactive displays. They talked to kids about their jobs and offered hands-on activities. The fields highlighted included energy, nursing, agriculture, and computer science.
“When young people see women actively working in these careers, they’re more likely to consider them,” said Beth Whisman, the museum’s executive director. “These are essential roles that need filling, especially in Central Illinois, where STEM plays a big part in agriculture.”
This was the second year the Children’s Discovery Museum celebrated International Women and Girls in Science Day, which the United Nations has recognized for a decade.
