Howard University and Arena Stage are joining forces again to launch the second year of the Creative Administrators Internship Program. This effort aims to help students step into leadership roles in the arts by providing real-world experience at one of America’s top regional theaters.
“We’re thrilled to kick off the second year of the internship,” says Pat Parks, a professor at Howard. Arena Stage’s focus on diverse American stories matches Howard’s mission to nurture the next wave of cultural leaders and storytellers.
The program started in 2024 with three seniors: Amir Shackelford, Samarion Montgomery, and Simone Thompson. They gained valuable skills across artistic, development, and management departments. Simone shared how the experience opened her eyes to various career paths. “Interning at Arena Stage gave me skills I can use anywhere. The community feel and connections made the experience unforgettable,” she said.
This fall, Arena will host three to four new interns. The program runs from September 2 to November 21 and aims to connect classroom learning with real industry practice.
Faculty members believe this partnership is changing the game for students. Robin Y. Harris, a master instructor, remarked on how this hands-on experience helps sharpen skills and enhances long-term success in the creative economy.
Dr. Dominique Douglas Hendricks also emphasized the importance of this initiative. She noted that it strengthens connections between the university and the local arts community. “We look forward to continuing this partnership for years,” she said.
Historically, arts internships have played a crucial role in shaping careers. According to a survey by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), 70% of arts graduates believe internships significantly influence job prospects. This program exemplifies how universities and cultural institutions can collaborate effectively to prepare future leaders.
With continued support from Arena Stage and Howard University, the next generation of arts administrators is set to thrive and carry the transformative power of theater into the future.
