Empowering the Next Generation: Spotlight on Children and Youth with Disabilities in the Okanagan

Families raising children with disabilities are finding their voices and support systems strengthened through community efforts. The Family Voices Project, led by the Family Support Institute of BC (FSI), is hosting free gatherings aimed at connecting these families with local resources and each other.

Tracy Humphreys, the project coordinator, emphasized the importance of these events. “It’s a chance for families to discover available support, share their journeys, and build a local network,” she explained.

The events welcome families of children and youth with disabilities, local service providers, and community partners. Gatherings are scheduled at three locations across the Okanagan:

  • In Vernon on Friday, April 4, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the People Place, room 006.
  • In Osoyoos on Saturday, April 5, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Sonora Centre, room #1.
  • In Kelowna on Sunday, April 6, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Starbright Children’s Development Centre.

Attendees can look forward to essential updates including the Community Connection initiative, insights from the Family Voices Report, and a workshop on training and advocacy skills. This is a valuable opportunity for parents to gain knowledge and connect with others who share similar experiences.

According to the latest survey from the Canadian Pediatric Society, nearly 15% of children in Canada live with a diagnosed disability. These statistics underline the need for robust support systems and community connections for families navigating these challenges.

The events are free, but everyone is asked to register in advance. You can do this at this link.
