A man named Andy Evans has experienced a remarkable change in his life thanks to new AI glasses. After losing his sight and becoming unemployed, these glasses have helped him regain independence and improved his overall quality of life.

Andy, 57, from Larkhall near Bath, was unemployed after losing his vision while working nights at a supermarket. He recently purchased AI glasses that have a camera and tiny speakers built into the frame. Now, he can do everyday tasks like ordering food at a restaurant and detecting obstacles in his path just by asking the glasses.

These Ray-Ban glasses, developed by Meta—the company behind Facebook—are voice-activated. Users can engage with the built-in AI to get information about their surroundings. Andy particularly enjoys selecting Dame Judi Dench’s voice to guide him, who jokingly calls him “James Bond.”

Now back to work at the Sight Support West of England charity, Andy feels empowered. He explains, “What you can do is ask them to look around and tell you what’s happening. It’s life-changing technology.”

Robin Spinks, from the Royal National Institute of Blind People, emphasizes the significance of such advancements. He notes that the glasses represent “real tangible impact” for individuals with visual impairments. Spinks, who is also blind, uses similar technology daily. He describes how being able to receive descriptions of places—like a beach or zoo—has been transformative for him.

Experts are optimistic about the future of smart glasses. The technology is still developing, but the potential to improve lives is vast. According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, approximately 2.7 billion people have some form of vision impairment. Devices like AI glasses could change daily experiences for many.
