Washington, DC – Walter Copan, who works in Research and Technology Transfer at the Colorado School of Mines, spoke today before the U.S. House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. His focus was the current state of science and tech in the U.S.
Joining him were notable experts like Heather Wilson, president of the University of Texas at El Paso and ex-Secretary of the U.S. Air Force; Sudip Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); and Samuel Hammond from the Foundation of American Innovation. They discussed how science and technology are crucial for keeping the U.S. competitive worldwide.
Copan stressed that America is at a critical crossroads. “We face significant global competition in science and technology, presenting both challenges and opportunities,” he mentioned. He believes the U.S. needs a strong new national strategy focused on building partnerships between public and private sectors. This includes better coordination between federal agencies and investing in STEM education and research.
He warned that the U.S. risks losing its edge in important tech areas to other countries. “Now is the time for real change to ensure America leads in innovation and protects our economic and national security for the future,” he emphasized.
