On April 3–4, 2025, over 900 young leaders from across Uganda gathered at the Youth Adaptation Forum. They united their voices, ideas, and energy to tackle climate change head-on. The event was hosted by the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), the Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment, Climate Change Adaptation Innovation (CHAI), and Makerere University.
This Forum was vital for young people. It provided them with skills, built their confidence, and encouraged innovative ideas for a more resilient future. With climate change’s impacts becoming more severe, the role of youth in shaping adaptation strategies is crucial. Experts stressed the need for increased financing, community involvement, and support for innovative solutions that promote sustainable growth.
A strong message emerged from the discussions: climate change significantly affects Ugandan youth. Effective adaptation is essential. Representation from all regions is crucial for driving environmental protection and resilience. However, young leaders need more support to expand their initiatives that target Uganda’s specific challenges.
Several innovative ideas took center stage during the Forum. Youth introduced Climate Resilient Hubs, blending traditional knowledge with modern practices for climate-smart agriculture. Initiatives like “waste-preneurship” showed how creative waste management can create business opportunities while addressing environmental issues. There were also youth-led efforts focused on tree planting and sustainable farming, emphasizing mentorship and education.
In a passionate closing statement, the youth called for action. They urged governments and private sectors to invest in adaptation finance and support for youth-led initiatives. The need for intergenerational dialogue and partnerships was highlighted, ensuring young voices are included in climate policy decisions. Expanding green job opportunities and prioritizing education in climate adaptation were also emphasized.
The passion at the Youth Adaptation Forum will carry forward. On October 12, 2025, young people globally will unite again for Youth Climate Adaptation Action Day. This event will serve as a platform to showcase their initiatives and further push for adaptation efforts.
