Empowering Women and Girls in Science: Celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day celebrates the important roles of women in science and highlights the ongoing gender gaps in the field.

Currently, only *less than 30% of researchers are women.* This statistic shows the pressing need for gender equality in science. This day calls for more opportunities and resources for women, encouraging them to lead in innovation and tackle global issues.

Women scientists are transforming their communities. A scientist from a rural area shared, “I never met female scientists when I was young, but now I can name several from my village.”

The CGIAR is deeply committed to fostering a gender-inclusive scientific community. For many years, they’ve worked to break down the barriers preventing women from participating in research.

With initiatives like funding, mentorship programs, and recognition of women’s contributions, CGIAR aims to create a more inclusive and innovative scientific landscape. These efforts not only amplify women’s voices but also produce real solutions to global challenges.

According to Purnima Menon, Senior Director for Food and Nutrition Policy at IFPRI, the growing presence of women in leadership is changing how organizations operate. She notes, “When women become leaders, they offer new perspectives that might otherwise go unnoticed.”
