Empowering Women as Changemakers in Climate Action: Rhonda Bannard’s Vision for a Greener Mother Earth

Rhonda Bannard sees her role in the climate movement as a connector. As a mom and community organizer, she specializes in uniting people around a common goal: protecting the planet. Despite not having formal training in environmental science, her passion and drive are undeniable.

For nearly 20 years, Rhonda has led a group known as the "Inspired Women’s Salon" in Phoenix. This gathering focuses on deep conversations about topics like courage, equality, and climate change. Rhonda finds that these discussions help foster community and a sense of shared responsibility.

Her journey into climate activism took a significant turn after meeting Brian Macinas, an Arizona State University student and organizer for AZ Youth Climate Strike. His enthusiasm inspired her to demand climate action alongside youth activists. This led to her big idea: creating a dedicated giving day for environmental causes.

In 2022, Bannard launched Earth Gives, a nonprofit designed to direct donations to climate solutions. She realized that only 2% of philanthropic funding goes to climate organizations. Many potential donors struggle to see the immediate impact of these donations. “It’s harder to tell the story of climate action, as it often feels less tangible,” she noted.

Earth Gives aims to change that by connecting donors with campaigns that really make a difference. The first giving day under this initiative will take place on October 7, 2023, with registration for nonprofits open until August 22.

Rhonda’s experience in nonprofit work gave her the tools to create this platform. She hopes to expand Earth Gives into a hub where donors can find, support, and volunteer with climate organizations year-round.

The emphasis on community came when she realized how powerful local initiatives can be. Inspired by the corporate social responsibility model of companies like Patagonia, Rhonda envisions Earth Gives as a way to show that capitalism can be about more than consumption.

For her, climate action is about love and connection. “The reason I’m doing this is because I’m a mom,” she said. She’s inspired by her children and believes in creating a brighter future for the next generation.

Experts agree that grassroots efforts are essential for meaningful change. Recent surveys suggest that community-driven initiatives engage individuals better, leading to a more active role in climate action.
