Eco Justice Initiatives has launched a Women Climate Champions Group in Bethanchowk Rural Municipality. This group is part of a project aimed at climate justice and empowering communities.
During an engaging session led by Susan Sapkota, the project lead, the focus was on women’s leadership, climate action, and protecting the environment. The goal is to boost women’s roles in tackling climate issues and promote local environmental governance.
Saumya Dhungel, the event manager, highlighted that this initiative will enhance women’s involvement and ensure a safer future for the next generations.
The group is led by Tara Rana Timilsina, the vice president of Bethanchowk, and includes 22 members with diverse backgrounds. Among them are seven elected ward members, four school teachers, a legal expert, the president of a school management committee, and various local representatives.
At the event, members committed to actively engaging in climate protection and fostering sustainable community practices. Crezal Thapa, co-lead of Eco Justice Initiatives, emphasized that women are often the most impacted by climate change, yet they are vital to crafting solutions. Empowering women locally is crucial for building resilient communities.
Recent research shows that women play a unique role in climate adaptation and community resilience. According to the UN, when women are involved in decision-making processes, communities are more effective in addressing environmental challenges.
Eco Justice Initiatives is a youth-led organization in Nepal focusing on climate justice and community engagement, with a special emphasis on women, youth, and marginalized groups.
