The International Centre for Environmental Health and Development (ICEHD) recently trained 100 women farmers in Abuja on climate-smart agriculture and sustainable farming practices. This session focused on teaching essential skills to help these women adapt to climate change and improve their farming livelihoods.
Dr. Ndudi Bowei from ICEHD noted that climate change is significantly impacting women farmers, causing challenges like soil degradation and loss of nutrients. She emphasized the importance of education and resources, stating that this initiative aims to empower women to produce resilient crops despite environmental changes.
The training covered various topics. Participants learned about managing their farm businesses, processing their produce, and even how to package and label their products for export. This comprehensive approach is designed to increase their knowledge of smart agricultural methods.
Mrs. Oloruntosin Taiwo, National Coordinator for the Rose of Sharon Foundation (ROSF), highlighted the initiative’s focus on supporting widow farmers. Many widows in the region face unique challenges, and this training aims to provide them with stability and independence through farming.
The event also featured a presentation by Mrs. Iyabo Mustapha, an assistant director at the Department of Agricultural Land and Climate Change Management Services. She stressed that adopting climate-smart agricultural practices is crucial for maintaining productivity in the face of climate challenges.
At the conclusion of the training, participants received valuable farming tools, including solar-powered irrigation systems and bio-fertilizers, to enhance their agricultural efforts. Women like Comfort Peter and Ruth Sunday expressed gratitude for the training and support, promising to apply what they learned.
This initiative is part of a growing trend to empower women in agriculture, particularly in response to climate change. According to a recent study by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), empowering women farmers can lead to a 20-30% increase in agricultural yields. This not only helps enhance food security but also contributes to local economies.
