Five students from the University of Nevada recently participated in a unique initiative with Dress For Success and local business leader Alexis Meruelo. This collaboration is all about empowering women in leadership roles.
The group included student-athletes like Gabby Kano from women’s golf and Natalia Martino from track and field, among others. They will attend the 2025 Business of Her Women’s Conference on November 15 in Las Vegas. This special event is designed for women at various stages in their careers, from entrepreneurs to established leaders. Thanks to Sahara Las Vegas and Martin Harris Construction, their travel, lodging, and registration have been completely covered.
Dr. Heather Speed, Vice President for Student Services at the University, highlighted the significance of community partnerships. “When the University, businesses, and nonprofits unite, we unlock opportunities for the next generation,” she said, emphasizing the spirit of collaboration in Nevada.
To ensure these women feel confident at the conference, Dress For Success provided each participant with a complete professional outfit, including shoes and accessories, at no cost. Volunteers took the time to help each woman find outfits that made them feel empowered.
Stephanie Rempe, Director of Athletics at Nevada, explained that this partnership goes beyond clothing. “It’s about building confidence, fostering opportunities, and harnessing community support,” she said.
Jessica Stack, Executive Director of Dress For Success Northern Nevada, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our mission is to help women walk into new experiences with pride.” The initiative started when Meruelo approached the University with the idea of sending local women to the conference.
One of the keynote speakers will be Lauralyn Sandoval, the First Lady of the University and a distinguished alumna. Her journey from being a student-athlete to a successful leader showcases the impact of education and hard work.
This program is an inspiring example of how community partnerships can create lasting change, offering women not just outfits, but also the confidence to succeed.
