Empowering Women in Climate Action: KEPS Unveils Groundbreaking Guide for Change

On July 5, the Kuwait Environment Protection Society (KEPS) unveiled an exciting new publication called “Women’s Guide to Climate Action and Shared Responsibility.” This guide is a milestone in efforts to empower women and emphasize their pivotal role in tackling the climate crisis.

Jenan Behzad, the Secretary General of KEPS, described the guide as a groundbreaking resource for the region. It sheds light on women’s contributions to environmental initiatives through a mix of scientific data and personal stories from Arab women who are making a difference in climate action and sustainable development.

Created with input from 11 female contributors from various countries, including Kuwait, Egypt, and Iraq, the guide features five chapters. These chapters tackle important issues, like how climate change specifically affects women, regional leadership in environmental efforts, and practical tips for living sustainably.

Behzad highlighted that this guide is designed to enhance the understanding of climate issues from a gender perspective. It aims to inspire women to actively engage as essential partners in environmental protection, noting that “Women are central to creating solutions and leading transformations toward a sustainable future.” Their influence within families and communities makes them critical players in driving change.

The publication was developed following discussions in a workshop called “Women between Climate Change and Sustainable Development,” which KEPS organized in partnership with the National Association for Family Security. This initiative illustrates the important connection between empowering women and achieving effective climate action in the Arab world.

Recent studies show that involving women in environmental decision-making can lead to better outcomes. According to the UN, women are often more affected by climate change but can also be powerful agents of change when given the right tools.
