Empowering Women Leaders: A Call to Strengthen Women’s Leadership in the Environmental Sector

Ulaanbaatar, April 14, 2025. Countries globally are stepping up to tackle climate change and desertification. They are forming international treaties and partnerships to create meaningful environmental policies.

Mongolia is playing a vital role in these efforts. Recently, it signed the Host Country Agreement for the upcoming 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, set for 2026. This agreement marks a significant moment, showcasing Mongolia’s commitment to environmental leadership worldwide.

On April 13, 2025, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization, held a meeting titled “Women’s Leadership in Environmental Action.” This event connected women ambassadors and leaders from international organizations. They shared experiences and discussed practical, gender-sensitive solutions to climate issues.

Minister Odontuya emphasized the importance of women’s involvement, stating that the “Women Environmental Leaders Group” she initiated aims to nurture impactful change. “Women’s participation is essential for building sustainable, inclusive, and innovative solutions,” she remarked.

The event gathered representatives from 11 countries and 20 international organizations. They expressed strong support for enhancing the roles of civil society, youth, and local communities in environmental initiatives. In addition, they stressed the need for training professionals in the field and crafting projects that meet local needs.

Recent statistics highlight the importance of women in leadership roles concerning climate action. A study by the United Nations Development Programme revealed that gender-diverse teams are more likely to create effective solutions for climate challenges. These teams help in better addressing the specific needs of communities impacted by climate change.

Social media trends also reflect growing awareness and discussion around women’s roles in environmental issues. Hashtags like #WomenInClimate and #EcoFeminism have gained traction, showcasing the collective power and innovation women contribute to environmental management today.
