Empowering Young Minds: 2026 Expansion Plans for Summer Camp Supporting Kids with Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges

A summer camp in Cumberland County, called Camp Heal, is aiming to grow next year. This camp helps kids facing mental health and substance use challenges. It started in response to the opioid crisis in the community, thanks to a $98,000 grant from the county’s opioid settlement.

Camp Heal began in 2018 at a park in Forsyth County and continued there until the COVID-19 pandemic hit. This year’s camps took place at the Rockfish Camp and Retreat Center in Robeson County. They welcomed students from Fayetteville’s Brentwood Elementary and 71st Classical Middle School during separate weeks in June and July.

According to Casey Perry, the camp’s director, the focus may shift next year. “We hope some kids will return, but we also want to bring in more participants,” she explained.

The camp features activities like classes on the dangers of vaping, dance therapy, and anti-bullying sessions. Tara Tucker, a behavioral health community paramedic, emphasized the importance of building trust between kids and first responders. She wants children to know that paramedics, police officers, and firefighters are there to help and can be fun, positive figures in their lives.

Recent statistics highlight the impact of mental health programs for youth. A report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that early intervention can significantly reduce substance abuse among adolescents. These initiatives, like Camp Heal, are essential in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and creating a supportive environment.

While Camp Heal is set to return next year, exact dates are still to be announced. It’s a hopeful sign that the community is prioritizing the well-being of its youth.
