TEHRAN – The first national science-skill Olympiad for students with disabilities is set to take place on May 9 in Tehran. This event, backed by the national foundation for the elite and the vice-presidency for science, technology, and knowledge-based economy, aims to highlight the talents and skills of these students in various disciplines.
The Olympiad is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their abilities in fields like Art and Literature, Engineering and Technology, and sports. Participants can explore topics ranging from Persian language and literature to robotics and chess. The goal is to encourage these students to engage actively in their communities and contribute to the country’s development.
The significance of this event aligns with the global push for the rights of persons with disabilities. On December 3, 2024, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities emphasized the importance of empowering people with disabilities, urging them to take charge of their own futures. This resonates with the motto of the global disability rights movement: “Nothing About Us Without Us.” It underscores the need for genuine inclusion and representation in society.
Ali-Mohammad Qaderi, the former head of the State Welfare Organization, addressed the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, particularly in light of international sanctions. He spoke at the 17th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in June 2024, emphasizing Iran’s commitment to enhancing services for individuals with disabilities, despite the financial burdens caused by sanctions.
Iran’s efforts to support the rights of persons with disabilities include the enactment of dedicated laws aimed at providing equal opportunities and respect for this community. The country is focused on ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their challenges, have the chance to thrive and participate fully in society.
