The Green Monkey, a beloved LGBTQ shop on Wilmington Street, is closing its doors after 12 years of serving the community. The owners shared the news in a heartfelt statement, expressing gratitude for their time as a brick-and-mortar store.
This closure is part of a larger trend in Raleigh, as other businesses have also shut down this year. Nearby, Vivie Aravidis and Pierce Rogers, owners of Pallbearer, a vintage shop, shared their sadness about the Green Monkey’s decision. They hope that this might create space for new small businesses to emerge.
Aravidis noted, “It’s tough to see neighbors close up shop. But let’s not forget that many new businesses have opened recently. Raleigh is bouncing back after the pandemic.”
In the past year, downtown has seen a mix of new openings and closures. Some residents believe that rising crime, particularly at Moore Square Station, has played a role in these changes.
Despite these concerns, Aravidis and Rogers feel that downtown is often judged too harshly. “People have a strong perception of downtown that might not reflect reality,” Rogers said. He believes the area is safe, beautiful, and enjoyable for families.
Many downtown business owners suggest that increasing events in the area could help boost foot traffic and support local shops. “Our downtown is historic and charming,” Rogers added. “We just need more happenings to draw people in.”
If you’re a fan of The Green Monkey, you have until March 15 to visit the store in person. After that, they will move their operations online.
