We grieve for the Iranian civilians and U.S. service members lost in the recent strikes. The conflicts in the region fuel instability and suffering, and it’s heartbreaking to see lives shattered by war.
Most Americans oppose the war. In its early days alone, the conflict has cost over $10 billion. Taxpayers could end up paying about $1 billion each day, while the world faces rising prices and economic instability as fuel costs soar.
The motivations behind this war are complex and often unclear. But what stands out is how deeply our actions are tied to a global economy driven by fossil fuel gains. Many will suffer, especially those already struggling to make ends meet.
When leaders advocate for more drilling instead of developing renewable energy, it doesn’t improve our safety. Instead, it leaves us vulnerable to manipulation from internal and external threats.
A healthier planet and a stronger global community could exist if we had prioritized sustainability over profit. The choices made by those in power have led us to a dire situation. Without a shift toward protecting our environment, we risk further damage to our ecosystems and communities.
Warfare significantly contributes to climate change and environmental harm. A recent study highlighted how conflicts, like the ongoing war in Ukraine, increase greenhouse gas emissions through fuel consumption and destruction of infrastructure. The current conflict adds to this pressing crisis, and it’s crucial that the actions of powerful nations are held accountable.
We stand with every American who opposes this war. Our priority should be to protect our planet and its people. To the civilians and children of Iran, and all who suffer in this unneeded war, we extend our compassion and solidarity.
