A big security operation is taking place in South Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire ahead of Donald Trump’s visit this Friday. He is expected to spend four days at his Turnberry golf resort and the Menie course.

The small village of Turnberry has seen an increase in visitors, with security personnel and police out in full force. There are road closures and diversions in place, and security checkpoints have been established around the resort.

Trump last visited Turnberry in 2021, after buying it from a Dubai company in 2014. As police convoys arrive from across the UK, local roads are being rerouted, which some residents find inconvenient.

Gavin Scott, a local councillor, shared mixed feelings. He sees the visit as a chance to highlight the area to the world. Yet, he voiced concern about security costs and how the heightened measures make the place feel more like a prison than a welcoming site.

Most locals have differing views. Iris Ritchie, a resident, mentioned that the increased police presence isn’t bothersome. She said, “It really hasn’t been that much of a nuisance; it’s just the way it is.” Meanwhile, Margaret Barr expressed worries about potential protests more than Trump’s presence itself, saying, “It is his hotel, the golf course is popular.”

Even political figures are weighing in. Ian Murray, the Scottish Secretary, expressed his intent to give Trump a warm welcome. In a recent interview on BBC Radio, he emphasized the importance of maintaining friendly ties with the U.S. He noted, “We have a long history and cultural ties with the U.S., and it’s essential we work closely together.”

In terms of statistics, a recent survey indicated that 60% of local residents feel apprehensive about the security implications, while 35% are simply curious about the heightened attention. Public interest is high on social media, with many discussing the pros and cons of the visit using hashtags like #TrumpInScotland.

Murray’s position is notably complex, given that in 2019 he voted to rescind an invitation for Trump’s official state visit due to concerns over his conduct. Reflecting on this, he stressed, “Global relationships matter, and it’s crucial for us to nurture our ties.”

Overall, while excitement stirs around Trump’s visit, it’s clear opinions vary widely among locals, and there’s a strong desire for safety as well as a positive spotlight on the area.
