A university in Finland is making history by launching the country’s first security technology program.
The University of Jyväskylä is introducing this degree to respond to the increasing threat of cyber-attacks, especially as we’ve seen groups exploit hacking to target critical systems.
For example, recent attacks on airports in Italy by pro-Russian hackers highlight the urgency of equipping students with the skills to defend against such crimes.
With this new program, students can dive deep into protective measures against cyber threats, as well as studies in areas like radiation, chemical, and biological safety.
Meeting a Growing Demand for Security Experts
This initiative will prepare future professionals in security technology to enhance corporate security and impact societal choices. According to the department head, Mikko Monkkonen, this program addresses a critical need for skilled individuals in Finland and Europe.
Monkkonen emphasizes the importance of equipping students with the tools to tackle cyber-crime effectively. “We’re dedicated to shaping graduates who can create safety practices for businesses and contribute to public decision-making regarding security,” he said.
A Comprehensive Program for Modern Challenges
This new module will fall under the Mathematics for Science department, offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees, giving students a wide range of options.
Marja Leena Laasko, the vice-rector, added, “Developing thorough technology degree programs allows us to meet the evolving demands of the job market more effectively.”
The program is set to launch in 2026, with 70 spots available for eager learners.
