Jacksonville, Ala. – Exciting updates are underway on State Route 21 as contractors work on pedestrian-friendly improvements near Jacksonville State University (JSU). According to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), these upgrades are set to enhance safety and access for both students and local residents.
A key feature of this initiative is the newly widened sidewalk that connects Brewer Hall to Nisbet Street NW, which finally opened its doors to students just in time for the start of classes. But that’s just the beginning. Additional enhancements include pedestrian islands, road resurfacing, improved traffic markings, and better signage.
This project represents a collaborative effort, with JSU contributing about $200,000. ALDOT has also allocated $800,000 in federal funds to support these vital improvements. And it’s not just about funding; the spirit of community collaboration shines bright. JSU Police Chief Michael Barton expressed gratitude for the teamwork involved in making the campus safer. He urges everyone to remain vigilant and practice safety as the construction continues. This is particularly important in a campus known as the “Friendliest Campus in the South.”
ALDOT’s East Central Region Engineer, DeJarvis Leonard, echoed this sentiment, noting the pride in contributing to the safety of JSU students and nearby residents. The construction should wrap up by the end of 2025, making way for a more secure environment for all.
Interestingly, pedestrian safety has become a hot topic nationwide. Recent studies indicate that improving infrastructure, like sidewalks and signage, can significantly reduce accidents. A report by the Governors Highway Safety Association found pedestrian fatalities increased by 21% from 2010 to 2020, underscoring the urgent need for such upgrades.
As Jacksonville State University adapts to these changes, it’s vital for students and faculty to stay informed. Upgrades like these not only improve safety but also enhance the overall experience of campus life.
