Enhancing Campus Safety: Exciting Pedestrian Upgrades Unveiled at Jacksonville State University

Jacksonville, Ala. – Exciting updates are underway on State Route 21 as contractors work on pedestrian-friendly improvements near Jacksonville State University (JSU). According to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), these upgrades are set to enhance safety and access for both students and local residents.

A key feature of this initiative is the newly widened sidewalk that connects Brewer Hall to Nisbet Street NW, which finally opened its doors to students just in time for the start of classes. But that’s just the beginning. Additional enhancements include pedestrian islands, road resurfacing, improved traffic markings, and better signage.

This project represents a collaborative effort, with JSU contributing about $200,000. ALDOT has also allocated $800,000 in federal funds to support these vital improvements. A report by the Governors Highway Safety Association found pedestrian fatalities increased by 21% from 2010 to 2020, underscoring the urgent need for such upgrades.
