On March 4, 2025, the European Union (EU) and South Africa held their 7th Policy Forum focused on Environment, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, and Water. This event took place in Brussels and online, highlighting both parties’ commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices.
The climate discussion was co-led by Diana Acconcia from the European Commission and Stuart Mangold from South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. They focused on important topics like Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), emissions reduction, climate adaptation, and sustainable development. The dialogue also touched on circular economy practices, biodiversity conservation, and water resilience.
The forum was a chance for both sides to prepare for COP30 in Brazil later that year. They emphasized the need for bold international actions and reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing negotiations for a global plastic treaty.
This event also served as a platform for discussing multilateral cooperation, especially with South Africa holding the G20 presidency in 2025. With the next EU-Africa Union Summit approaching, leaders expressed their shared commitment to ambitious climate action and stronger environmental cooperation.
As the EU and South Africa strengthen their partnership, this dialogue aims to foster a greener, more resilient future that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility and social inclusion.
