Austrian Airlines is the newest member of the Lufthansa Group to embrace AeroSHARK technology, which improves aerodynamics.
On January 14, 2024, the airline revealed that one of its Boeing 777-200ER planes (OE-LPC) flew from Bangkok (BKK) to Vienna (VIE) with a special fuel-saving surface.
AeroSHARK was created by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, a major German chemical company. This technology uses tiny transparent ribs, known as “riblets,” that measure about 50 micrometers. These riblets are added to key areas of the aircraft’s exterior to boost its aerodynamic efficiency, leading to fuel savings. The design is inspired by shark skin, which is how the technology got its name.
While this is the first time an Austrian Airlines plane and a Boeing 777-200ER has used AeroSHARK, Lufthansa and SWISS have already incorporated it into at least 17 aircraft. This includes a Boeing 747-400 and four Boeing 777 freighters for Lufthansa, as well as 12 Boeing 777-300ERs for SWISS.
Austrian Airlines plans to equip four out of its six Boeing 777-200ERs with a total of 830 square meters of AeroSHARK surface technology. Once completed by March 2025, each plane is expected to save up to 1% in fuel on every flight.
Other airlines around the globe, such as LATAM and All Nippon Airways (ANA), are also implementing AeroSHARK technology.
