Enhancing India’s Naval Superiority: How 6 New P-8I Aircraft from the US Will Strengthen Security in the Indian Ocean

India is set to acquire six more P-8I aircraft from the United States, confirmed during a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.

These P-8I aircraft are designed for long-range maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. They will boost the Indian Navy’s ability to monitor the Indian Ocean, especially with the rising number of Chinese ships and submarines in the area, often framed as anti-piracy or survey missions.

A joint statement from both countries noted that the deal is almost complete and the terms have been agreed upon. This addition will improve India’s presence in the Indian Ocean, helping it keep an eye on possible threats.

India’s partnership with the P-8I began with the purchase of 12 aircraft, starting with eight in 2009 and an extra four in 2016. The Navy sought 10 more, but only six were approved in November 2019, and the deal was cleared by the US State Department in May 2021.

The P-8I is equipped with advanced radar and can fly at altitudes of up to 41,000 feet, scanning the ocean below. It has an impressive range, covering about 8,300 kilometers in one flight. These aircraft come with multiple hard points for various weapon systems, including anti-ship missiles and torpedoes.

Alongside the P-8I, the Indian Navy is also looking to enhance its surveillance with the MQ-9B drone. A total of 31 of these drones are expected to arrive by 2029. They will provide real-time monitoring over the Indian Ocean, which sees a busy mix of naval and commercial traffic.

Combined, the P-8I aircraft and MQ-9B drones will significantly strengthen the Indian Navy. This development is crucial for protecting India’s maritime interests in a region that faces increasing competition and challenges.
