New Delhi, Aug 11 (IANS) – The 8th High-Level Meeting (HLM) between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) focused on important topics: marine pollution response and maritime search and rescue.
Both sides are committed to improving how they work together. They want to share knowledge and ideas to create a safer maritime environment. These talks showcase the strong bond between India and Sri Lanka.
The discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in marine pollution management, search and rescue operations, and maritime law enforcement. They also emphasized the need for capacity building and technical support.
The meeting was led by Rear Admiral Y.R. Serasinghe from Sri Lanka and ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani from India. They recognized the need to tackle current maritime challenges together. This includes keeping the seas safe, secure, and environmentally friendly.
The SLCG team is visiting India from August 10 to August 14 for these meetings and other professional activities, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2018.
In related news, the Indian Navy announced that it will commission two advanced frigates, Udaygiri (F35) and Himgiri (F34), on August 26 in Visakhapatnam. This is a significant event—it’s the first time two major ships from different Indian shipyards will be commissioned simultaneously.
These frigates are products of a collaboration involving over 200 small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), generating about 4,000 direct jobs and over 10,000 indirect jobs. This achievement reflects the ongoing initiatives like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the defense sector.
These partnerships and developments are crucial as India and Sri Lanka navigate contemporary challenges. They highlight the importance of strategic cooperation in ensuring maritime stability.
