Enhancing Maternal Health in Brazos Valley: BlueCross, BlueShield of Texas Joins Forces with Project Unity

BlueCross and BlueShield of Texas (BCBSTX) is teaming up with local organizations to improve care for mothers and their babies. Recently, they announced a $2 million grant to help enhance maternal health services across the state. This move comes as Texas ranks a worrying 48th in maternal health nationwide.

In 2023, BCBSTX launched an initiative called Special Beginnings aimed at supporting pregnant mothers. Dr. Yolanda Lawson, the Executive Medical Director for Maternal and Infant Health at BCBSTX, emphasized the importance of these grants. She noted that partnering with various community organizations is crucial to reach as many people as possible.

This year, BCBSTX is also collaborating with Project Unity, which has introduced a new program called Brazos Healthy Communities. This program focuses on comprehensive care from prenatal to postnatal stages for mothers and their babies. Jacob Biswell from Project Unity shared that they use a model known as 21 Pathways. This approach involves Community Health Workers who check in on families to ensure they have access to essential resources like food and medical care.

“Thanks to a $175,000 partnership with BlueCross BlueShield, we can hire two more Community Health Workers,” Biswell said. This funding is vital for continuing their services, which have already helped over 100 families. Biswell mentioned they serve ten counties and are hopeful that this collaboration will lower maternal and infant mortality rates.

Lawson recognized that Project Unity offers a fresh approach to care. “We aim to enhance resources and make sure families receive what they need,” she stated. BCBSTX’s ongoing commitment to investing in local organizations showcases their dedication to ensuring that all mothers and babies in Texas get the care they deserve.

This initiative highlights a growing awareness of maternal health issues and the critical role of community support in addressing them. With the right resources and partnerships, there’s hope for a healthier future for mothers and their babies in Texas.
