New Delhi: The Indian Railways is making strides in passenger safety with the recent completion of field trials for the upgraded Kavach Version 4.0. These trials took place between Bamrauli and Athsarai in Uttar Pradesh, marking a key step in the “Mission Raftar Project,” which aims to improve train speeds and safety measures.

A railway official explained that over seven days, they tested the Kavach system using a WAP-7 locomotive and an LHB rake certified for speeds up to 130 km/h. The trials involved both initial tests and thorough evaluations, monitored by the Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

What’s New in Kavach 4.0?

Kavach 4.0 brings notable upgrades. It features improved location accuracy, better signal information for large railway yards, communication between stations via Optical Fiber Cable (OFC), and seamless integration with Electronic Interlocking systems. These upgrades aim to boost safety and operational efficiency.

This upgraded version represents a significant advancement for India’s home-grown Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, setting the stage for broader implementation across the nation.

Understanding Kavach

Kavach helps train operators stick to speed limits. It can automatically apply brakes if needed, ensuring safe operation even in bad weather. The system has evolved since its initial trials in 2016, leading to the development of Kavach Version 3.2, approved by ISA in 2018-19.

The Scope of Kavach 4.0

Approved by RDSO on July 16, 2024, Kavach 4.0 includes essential features for India’s diverse railway needs. The railways ministry mentioned their rapid development and deployment of the Automatic Train Protection System, emphasizing its importance for safety.

Implementation Details

Plans are in place to equip 10,000 locomotives with Kavach. So far, 69 locomotive sheds are ready for installation. The project also involves bids for track-side works covering around 15,000 route kilometers, with contracts awarded for 1,865 kilometers.

Funding the Project

As of now, around ₹1,950 crore have been spent on Kavach. For the fiscal year 2024-2025, the allocation is ₹1,112.57 crore. Funds are provided based on project progress, according to Lok Sabha data.
