Enhancing Passenger Safety: Railways Set to Install CCTV Cameras in All Coaches and Locomotives

In a bid to enhance passenger safety, the Ministry of Railways has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in all train coaches. These cameras will operate effectively even at high speeds and in low-light conditions.

The decision came after a review meeting led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Officials mentioned that the cameras will be set up strategically to prioritize passenger privacy, installed mainly near the doors of the coaches.

Currently, trains like the Vande Bharat and Tejas Express already have these surveillance systems in place. A successful trial run in Northern Railway indicated that each coach will likely have two cameras at each entrance, totaling four per coach. Locomotives will have even more—six cameras positioned around the exterior and two inside.

These camera systems are certified by the Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) directorate. Their main purpose? To help railway staff identify any suspicious activities or miscreants. There’s also an exciting prospect of using AI to analyze the data collected from these cameras, thanks to an initiative from the IndiaAI mission.

As of now, Northern Railway has already installed cameras in over 6,000 coaches, including LHB and ICF types. The installation process is set to continue, with tenders issued for expanding this project across all coaches.

This move aligns with a growing trend in transportation and tech, where surveillance is increasingly seen as a vital tool for safety. With public transport systems around the world embracing similar measures, this initiative could very well serve as a model for other regions.
