Saskatchewan has had a tough time with bitter cold recently, seeing temperatures drop to -40 degrees Celsius in some areas. That really set records over the Family Day weekend!
But don’t worry, things are about to get better. Shannon Moodie, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, shares some good news. “It feels like February has been nothing but freezing weather,” she says.
Fortunately, warmer air from the Pacific Ocean is moving in. This, along with some weaker weather systems, is set to bring a milder temperature to the prairies.
“We should see this nice weather stick around for at least a week, maybe even longer,” Moodie explains. While it’s hard to predict if another blast of Arctic air will come through, she notes that we’re heading into March. With longer days ahead, a warming trend is on the horizon.
Interestingly, the temperatures coming up aren’t too far above the norm for this time of year. “We’ve just been so cold for so long that this warmer weather feels fantastic,” she adds.
For example, average highs in Saskatoon and Regina are usually around -4 degrees Celsius during the day, with nighttime temperatures dropping to about -15 degrees Celsius.
So, hang in there, Saskatchewan! Warmer days are finally on their way.
