For the 14th year in a row, Delaware State Fairgoers can enjoy free admission on Monday, July 21, by donating five Food Lion-brand canned or boxed goods. The donations benefit the Food Bank of Delaware, a cause that has made a real difference over the years.
Since 2012, the fair has collected around 250,000 pounds of food. This has provided more than 300,000 meals to people facing hunger in our community. Food Lion launched its Feeds initiative in 2014 to tackle food insecurity in its local areas.
Cathy Kanefsky, president and CEO of the Food Bank of Delaware, expressed gratitude for the partnership: “This event brings our community together, turning a day at the fair into a chance to help our neighbors. Every can counts, and the generosity we see year after year inspires us.”
Carly Callahan, the marketing manager for the Delaware State Fair, echoed this sentiment, saying, “Seeing thousands of fairgoers bringing donations is truly incredible.”
Volunteers from both Food Lion and the Food Bank will be at all entrance gates to collect donations. Remember, glass containers aren’t accepted. Some of the most needed items include tuna, peanut butter, cereal, pasta, and canned fruits and vegetables.
This initiative isn’t just about giving; it reflects a growing awareness of food insecurity in the U.S. According to recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, around 10.5% of American households faced food insecurity in 2021. Events like this fair are vital in creating community support and awareness.
