The Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, has launched a new climate policy and action plan aimed at tackling climate change challenges in the region. This initiative, revealed recently in Enugu, is dubbed the “Enugu State Climate Policy, Climate Action Plan, and Climate Education Manual for Schools.”

The plan is designed to integrate climate action into various sectors, addressing immediate environmental concerns. Governor Mbah, represented by Deputy Ifeanyi Ossai, highlighted the importance of developing effective solutions to combat climate change, which is becoming increasingly urgent.
To promote awareness, the climate education manual for students is a key component of this plan. Mbah emphasized that educating young people about climate change and environmental protection is essential for the state’s future. He stated, “To foster growth, we must create a supportive and eco-friendly environment.”
The governor also announced an intention to pass legislation against illegal tree cutting, promoting reforestation instead. This shift in approach is vital to combat the destructive impacts of deforestation on the environment. Mbah expressed gratitude to partners such as the Africa Climate Foundation (ACF) and the University of Bristol for their support in these efforts.
Professor Sam Ugwu, the State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, described this initiative as a significant move towards ensuring a sustainable future. He pointed out that climate change poses a serious global threat with far-reaching effects on communities and habitats. Ugwu noted that the new policy aims to blend sustainability into every economic sector, enhancing green investments and creating job opportunities.
Experts are weighing in on the significance of these measures. Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Climate Policy, stressed the importance of Climate Smart Agriculture as a key strategy. This form of agriculture can help communities adapt to climate impacts while maintaining productivity.
Meanwhile, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, announced that an implementation committee will be formed to ensure the successful execution of climate strategies. UNICEF’s Chief Field Officer, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, praised the state’s commitment to its Smart Green School initiative. She highlighted the organization’s role in safeguarding children’s rights in connection to climate challenges.
Statistics show that climate change is affecting millions globally. According to a report by the World Meteorological Organization, 2020 was one of the hottest years on record. This increasing trend emphasizes the importance of local actions like the ones being undertaken in Enugu.
By prioritizing climate education and sustainable practices, Enugu State is taking a proactive stance in the global fight against climate change, aiming to become a model for other regions in Nigeria.
