Enugu Launches Groundbreaking Climate Policy and Action Plan: A Guide for Schools and Communities to Combat Climate Change

The Enugu State Government has taken an important step in addressing climate change by officially launching its Climate Change Policy and Climate Action Plan. This event took place on March 17, 2025, in Enugu, and also introduced a Climate Manual for Schools aimed at educating future leaders about environmental issues.

Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah led the initiative, which was approved in January 2025, to promote sustainable development and investments in the region. During the launch, Environment Commissioner Professor Sam Ugwu emphasized how climate change affects the environment and highlighted Enugu’s commitment to taking meaningful action. He noted that the new policy would not just support green investments but also create jobs in the green economy.

Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, a key figure behind the policy’s creation, shared that data from as far back as 1985 was used in developing these strategies. He warned that without action, agriculture in Enugu could face severe challenges due to climate impacts.

Notably, the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, stressed that combatting climate change is a shared responsibility. Uche Ugwu, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, conveyed the importance of this policy, likening it to the commitments made under the 2015 Paris Agreement. He assured that the assembly would approve necessary legislation promptly.

This launch received wide support from various stakeholders, including Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, who expressed readiness to work with Enugu on climate projects. Zira Quaghe from the African Climate Foundation praised Enugu as a model for other states, while UNICEF’s Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe emphasized the educational importance of the new manual.

These efforts come at a critical time, with recent reports indicating that Nigeria ranks among the countries most vulnerable to climate change. According to a 2023 World Bank report, climate-related disruptions could cost Nigeria over $10 billion annually by 2030 if not addressed. The proactive response from Enugu State may serve as a blueprint for other regions in the country.

Businesses like Nigeria Breweries are also getting involved, sourcing a portion of their energy from solar power. Their initiatives show a commitment to sustainability that is vital for the future.

Governor Mbah, whose administration prioritizes environmental sustainability, noted the rich coal resources in Enugu. He encouraged finding eco-friendly alternatives for coal use and initiated a tree-planting campaign to restore the state’s greenery.

As these initiatives unfold, the government’s formation of an implementation team for the Climate Policy and Action Plan signifies a commitment to action. This could help transform Enugu into a leader in environmental sustainability, setting an example for other states.
