Kathmandu. Gita Chaudhary, the Minister for Forests and Environment, is focused on making the ‘National Climate Change Policy, 2082’ effective and actionable. Speaking at a seminar organized by her ministry, she emphasized that this policy aims to be more than just a document.
Minister Chaudhary highlighted the serious issue of melting glaciers in Nepal. This has led to increased flooding and posed risks to life, property, and crucial infrastructure, particularly in coastal areas. Although Nepal contributes only a tiny percentage to global greenhouse gas emissions, it faces severe climate challenges. The country is experiencing excessive rainfall, prolonged droughts, forest fires, and declining agricultural yields, all of which threaten food security.
The new policy will specifically target the needs of vulnerable groups such as the poor, Dalits, indigenous people, women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities. Minister Chaudhary shared her vision of connecting forest conservation with economic benefits. With 46% of Nepal’s land covered by forests and 24% designated as protected areas, she believes carbon trading and ecotourism can support economic growth while preserving the environment.
She also called for blending traditional practices with modern technology, particularly AI, for climate adaptation. A strong strategy for climate finance and improved coordination among local, provincial, and federal levels are essential for this initiative.
As Nepal plans to move from a least developed country to a developing one by 2026, balancing development with environmental sustainability remains a crucial challenge. The minister reiterated Nepal’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its goal to amplify the “voice of the Himalayas” on the global stage.
Recent studies show that countries facing similar climate challenges are shifting towards sustainable practices to protect their environments while fostering economic growth. This trend underlines the importance of policies that not only focus on reduction but also on adaptation.
