Environment Minister Explores Innovative World Bank Projects Transforming Greater Cairo: Insights and Highlights

Yasmine Fouad, Egypt’s Minister of Environment, recently met with a team from the World Bank to discuss a major project aimed at tackling air pollution and climate change in Greater Cairo. This initiative, worth $200 million, is a collaboration between Egypt and the World Bank.

During the meeting, the minister went over the latest updates from the World Bank’s recent assessment. One highlight was the progress in the electric bus initiative, with the first batch of buses set to arrive soon. They also talked about the integrated waste management project in the city of 10th of Ramadan and the ongoing efforts to close the Abu Zaabal landfill in Qalyubeya. Updates about timelines, budgets, and challenges faced in these projects were important topics of discussion.

A significant part of the conversation focused on how to encourage private companies to participate in waste management. They discussed new contract models in 10th of Ramadan that could attract private investments. This aligns with Egypt’s new investment law which offers green incentives to boost participation in waste management.

Fouad paid special attention to the plans for shutting down the Abu Zaabal landfill, reviewing its design and timelines. She also learned about initiatives to reduce air pollution and enhance environmental monitoring. These initiatives include specialized training programs and advanced monitoring tools to better track progress.

The meeting included key figures such as Ali Abu Senna, the CEO of the Environmental Affairs Agency, Yasser Abdullah, head of the Waste Management Regulatory Agency, and Mohamed Hassan, the national coordinator for the project, along with representatives from the Ministry of Planning and the World Bank.
